Choosing the Perfect Fire Pit for Your Backyard

One of the things we love about spending time outdoors is enjoying time with family and friends around a campfire. The ambiance a warm fire creates is cozy and inviting. Everyone is laughing and telling stories and hot dogs and s’mores are being cooked over the flames. It’s a relaxing atmosphere; one that everyone can enjoy.

These days you don’t have to trek out to the woods or a campground in order to have a campfire, you can have one in your own backyard. Fire pits are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners. They not only add convenience but provide a way to enjoy longer periods of time in the outdoors during cooler weather. After deciding you would like to place a fire pit in your backyard, you’ll want to determine whether you’ll want a permanent or portable fire pit.

Portable or Permanent?

Portable fire pits can be moved to any location you choose and can be removed from your backyard completely if you find yourself needing more space. While having the ability to move your fire pit around may be quite convenient, pay attention to the size or style before you make a purchase. Many are quite large and heavy, making it difficult to move them from one location to another.

A permanent fire pit can be built to your specifications. Often people will integrate it into the design of their outdoor living space, creating decorative landscape features or beautiful focal points. The design can be as simple or elaborate as you choose. Many homeowners choose to place their fire pit in a corner or along the edge of their patio, allowing them to keep the area open and functional.

Wood Burning or Gas?

Both portable and permanent fire pits offer the option to use gas or wood for your fire. Gas provides a convenient way to manage your fire, allowing it to light instantly. You can also turn off the fire when you’re ready to go in without having to wait for the fire to die down and embers to cool. However, gas can be a bit costly and may not provide the size and warmth of a wood-burning flame.

Using wood for your fire pit, with the crackling sound and smoky scent provides that authentic campfire atmosphere. Wood is inexpensive and provides large, warm flames – which warm a larger space. However, wood can take longer to light and you’ll want to stay outside until the fire has gone out and the embers have cooled.

A Creative Option

A gas equipped fire pit can be supplied with lava rocks or glowing glass fire rocks. Glowing glass comes in a variety of colors and creates a unique show for your family and guests.
